Anne of Green Gables is iconic. She represents the creative child within us—the buoyant delight and spontaneous response to the wonder of everything. Anne is the unbridled, untainted, uninhibited, unafraid child who expects and finds beauty and joy everywhere. She is the artist and the writer and the creative thinker within all of us. Considering some of the dark aspects of human nature that we are a part of and must endure, Anne, with her red braids, her audacity, and her willingness, redeems us. She is the best in all of us. No wonder we love her.

“Anne!” a painting by Phoebe Stone in gouache and pastel of a young girl seen from the back walking along a path toward a house, her yellow hat glowing with sunlight.

Bio: Phoebe Stone is the author of seven novels for young people, four of which were bestsellers for Scholastic, including The Romeo and Juliet Code, one of National Public Radio Best Books of the Year. Phoebe is also the author-illustrator of three picture books for children, including the much loved When the Wind Bears Go Dancing (Little, Brown and Co.) with the artwork done mostly in pastel on paper. Phoebe fondly remembers travelling to Prince Edward Island with her husband and small son some years ago, crossing through mist and fog on a ferry boat, riding along red roads near the sea, reading Anne of Green Gables aloud in the car the whole way there, Anne and her charm enriching the journey in multiple layers.
